Story Behind the Coffee

21 year old Hifthallah Alhaymi is a two-time winner at the Best of Yemen auction. He owns a farm in Hayma Kharijiya on the western end of Sana’a. From a young age, Hifthallah was inclined toward farming and assisted his father and brothers, who later moved away to grow vegetables instead of coffee. Hifthallah had other plans. He chose to stay behind and overtake the daily operations, with deep faith that he can improve not just his production but also the quality of his coffee. Now married with two children, Hifthallah remembers those early days. “I was nervous at first because I was really young. But my mother stood by me and supported me through it all. She was my rock. I spent most of my time tending to the coffee trees, and she helped me water them and pick cherries. She still helps out to this day.” Hifthallah is confident in his coffee, and metaphysically remarks, “coffee is both, the present and the future”.
