Story Behind the Coffee

Abdullah Alriyae inherited traditional coffee cultivation from his father and grandfather. Unlike his brothers, his neighbours and peers, Abdullah did not migrate away from the village. His love for the land and the craft of coffee cultivation roots him. "I am proud to be a coffee grower. I am proud to be carrying on the tradition of my ancestors", he says, while pondering over this conversation. Today, he runs the farm with the help of a few relatives; Abdullah’s brothers also visit during the harvest season to help him in the fields. An ardent advocate of Yemeni coffee cultivation, his advice to farmers is robust: “Pay attention to your trees. Coffee is a treasure, like gold. It must be preserved.” Unparalleled in his care, attention and dedication to farming, Abdullah also grows fruits and grains. He hopes to receive external support to build dams and reservoirs, which would help to improve the water supply for his farm and increase his production capacity.
