Story Behind the Coffee

“Some days I cannot believe that I have been accompanying my father to the fields since I was a young boy”, says Hashid Abdo, resident of Bait Alal in Hayma Kharijiya region of Sana’a. “In 2009, my parents and siblings all moved to live in Sana’a. But I could not bring myself to leave the coffee farm. Early on in my life, I wanted to be an architect, but realising my love for coffee farming in that moment changed everything for me.” Hashid was left alone in the village, where he worked day in and day out, with a single aim: to make his coffee endeavour successful. This quest has not been easy. During harvest season, he would have to request help from his relatives in picking cherries. Sometimes, plant diseases would affect a large portion of the trees, and other times, he would have difficulty in accessing water for irrigation. But this has not dampened Hashid’s spirits. He has learnt and grown tremendously from these challenges, and looks forward to planting disease-resistant varieties on his farm. In closing, Hashid believes that it's only fair to brave any challenges that come his way by following in the footsteps of his father, who was one of the most famous farmers in the region during his time.
