Story Behind the Coffee

Aljidan is a village in the Hayma Kharijiya province of Yemen, where coffee cultivation goes back 400 years. Around 50 farming families collectively grow coffee in Aljidan today, farms ranging from 2.2–44 sq. metres. One can find handcrafted ploughs and axes, as well as delicately embroidered tools and jambiya belts. Coffee has been growing in the village of Aljidan for over 400 years. Out of around 50 coffee farming families, 34 work with Qima Coffee. The largest farm is 44m2 whilst the smallest is just 2.2m2. The village is characterised by its hot yet rainy summers and bitterly cold winters. Aside from growing coffee, farming families here also grow vegetables, corn and qat. Some families work in handcrafting agricultural tools such as ploughs and axes. Women work in the delicate art of embroidery, sewing intricate details onto tools and jambiya belts.
