Story Behind the Coffee

Kamal Abdullah Muhammad Zaid is a coffee producer living in Beihan, a rural area of Yemen known for its high-quality coffee output. He descends from a long line of coffee growers, who have been tilling the land for generations. His current farm belonged to his grandfather, and has about 4,000 coffee plants in a lush valet. In addition to coffee, he grows corn and raises livestock. Kamal’s fascination with coffee started when he was about 14 years old, in the third year of his middle school. Due to the untimely demise of his father, he took over the trade to support his big family, which consists of 35 people, 12 of whom work in agriculture. Over the years, his passion for coffee and expertise in rearing has only honed and sharpened. His biggest challenge is living in Beihan, where there is little access to transportation and healthcare. But being born and raised here means he knows how to get around, no matter how tough the circumstances become. Kamal praises his father and grandfather for teaching him this, along with passing their skills in soil care and coffee cultivation. Kamal’s enthusiasm for coffee shines through as he speaks: “Yes, I want to expand my farm and production, but not only because of profits. I believe that coffee as a crop is beneficial to the environment and the Yemeni society as a whole. I would recommend other farmers to switch from planting harmful stimulant plants, to planting coffee instead. This beautiful crop carries more respect, more value.”
